Reflection on mentorships in LMICs

There are two issues that I like to reflect on mentorship in LMICs. Firstly, mentorship like many other science development elements is yet to gain maturity. I have come across many mentorship programmes that are implemented with some challenges e.g. the mentorship skillset of mentors, the institutional structure to support the efforts, and policies to advance and incentivise mentorships. Secondly, the relationships between mentors and mentees are complex e.g. the paternalistic status of mentors, the perspective of gaining knowledge and skills rather than giving, the bi-directional learning approach, and conflicts of interest in transferring experience for professional growth of mentees. The goal and mentorship outcome can still be the same, but the approach must be customised to reflect local norms and traditions to ensure the success of programmes.

I think the points made in the Strengthening Mentoring in Low- and Middle-Income Countries to Advance Global Health Research: An Overview paper are valid and apply in my setting and the solutions offered if institutionally implemented could really improve the growth of individuals.
