I have experience of being in both roles at different stages of my life. Learning never finishes and I learn more from mentorship than from other traditional training and education methods. That is when the relationship and trust are established I feel at ease to reflect, learn and grow. As a mentee, I have experienced the jealousy of mentors and as a mentor, I have experienced the lack of willingness and openness to change, though I have learned from both occasions. Also, I have noticed that when both parties do not see the benefit of a mentoring relationship, a one-sided effort fails to achieve the desired outcome. The programme can be initiated by one party, but the interest and buy-in from the other party are equally important.
