  • Environmental Health

    The course is designed to provide an introduction for health professionals to the causes of environmental threats to Public Health, the size of the problem and how to utilise an evidence based approach to reducing these environmental threats to health.

    Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:

    • Have broad knowledge of the field of environmental health;
    • Describe major ways in which the environment and human health are connected in different parts of the world, and in different populations; 
    • Identify the sources and routes of physical, chemical, and biological agents of the environment; 
    • Gain understanding on health impact among individuals/population of these exposures;
    • Find ways to limit and control the exposure to the public; and mitigate the adverse effects of the environment on health.

    The important aspects of climate change are not included in this course, there is a separate course on Climate Change and Public Health.

    How to navigate the course

    Each topic comprises some introductory remarks. To access resources we think you will find interesting - click on the collections of resources in each section. There is a forum in each topic for reflection and a quiz at the end to check your understanding.

    We encourage you to reflect on what you have learned or comment on the course. When you click on the hyperlinks in each forum labelled reflection, you will be able to add a new topic or respond to a previous one. You may want to share your learning from this and other readings, comment on the topics from your own experience, comment on others' posts, or provide feedback on how we can improve the content and presentation.

    In the final topic you will see that you can gain a Certificate of Completion - the requirements for this are to access the resources and post a reflection in each section and pass the quiz at the end. This is a self-directed course, to be taken at your own pace.

    Learning outcome

    By the end of this section, you should have a basic understanding of the extent of the ways in which the environment can impact on health

    1. Section 2: Methods of estimating health risks due to environmental hazards

      Learning outcome

      By the end of this section, you should have a basic understanding of the methods used to identify environmental hazards and the health risks associated with exposure to these hazards.

    2. Section 3: Major environmental hazards and related health impacts

      Learning outcome

      By the end of this section, you should be able to understand the health impacts of some of the more important environmental hazards: chemicals, air pollution, water and sanitation, and waste.

    3. Section 4: mitigation measures - strategies to combat environmental diseases

       

      Learning outcome

      By the end of this section, you should be able to understand the direct and indirect controls to mitigate the adverse impact of the environment on health, including the policy models and required development and modification of  infrastructure

    4. Section 5: Conclusions

      This section summarises and concludes the course.

      The learning outcome is to have reviewed the main points in the course so that you are ready to take the quiz and earn a certificate.
